Residential moving checklist

Do not delay preparations for the move to the back burner. We offer you a step by step residential moving checklist that helps you organize and move without any problems.

3 weeks before the move:

  • Order boxes and bags for packaging equipment.
  • Start removing the mezzanine and cabinets to find things that you would like to give or to sell (to decide what to do with them).
  • Decide what furniture you will need in the new home and what is better to sell, to send to the cottage or donate to relatives. Arrange transportation of the furniture in advance.
  • Sort out the documents – pick out the most important. It is necessary to put them in a separate small box, mark and set separately. This box you should always keep in sight.
  • Analyze your video and photo archives, memorabilia, jewelry, video cameras, a laptop and so on. Fold in a separate box and mark as a valuable cargo. You should keep this box during the journey.
  • Now you can start packing furnishings and other things, which are not used in everyday life.
  • Do not forget to label every box that you fill to find the desired object in a new place quickly.

2 weeks before the move:

  • Order the estimation of your removal in a moving company. Weigh the pros and cons and decide finally how to move: alone or with the help of professionals.
  • If you decide to move independently – define the day "X" when you start to move, it is best to take at least 2-3 days.
  • Phone your friends and gain their support for the move, inform the date of the moving. You need at least 4 assistants.

1 week before the move:

  • If you do not have a cargo transport, phone the transportation company, find out the prices for rental cars and the characteristics of the proposed vehicles. Order the car of the right size for all the days of the moving.

3 days before the move:

  • Print this checklist and begin to mark those items that you have made. Keep this list with you, even while on the move.

2 days before moving:

  • Make the last time washing of your clothes, as it has to dry before the departure, and then unplug the washing machine.

On the eve of the moving

  • Early in the morning, prepare meals, which you can use in the coming days. It is desirable that they are not perishable, pack them in containers and refrigerate.
  • Remove the curtains in all the rooms.

On the day of the move:

  • Start with the furniture packaging. Turn away all the handles from the furniture and screw them on the backside, or wrap them in paper and stretch tape.
  • Remove all the shelves that are not attached permanently. Pack them together and mark.
  • Dismantle the furniture that cannot be moved assembled. Pack all the furniture in the professional packing materials or other available means. It must be done in the apartment, as the furniture is damaged mainly during the process of removal from the premises.
  • When the furniture is prepared for transportation, start making it out and loading into the car. Important! First, load furniture and large items, and only after this, start loading boxes and packages. If you do the opposite, your moving will last "forever."
  • In preparation for the moving, try not to load passages with boxes. Put them on the top of each other along the walls, so that the passage remains sufficient to carry the furniture.

After the moving:

  • Do not seek to catch everything in one day. If you do not have time to assemble the furniture and you have nothing to sleep on, that’s okay, put the mattresses and pillows with blankets on the floor. In the end, this will make a note of adventures in your relocation and in old age you will have something to remember.
  • First, determine where there will be a refrigerator and turn it on, then immediately spread out the products brought.
  • Connect a gas or electric stove, so you can prepare meals. (But remember, you still have pre-cooked food in containers).
  • Unpack only the following items: hygiene items (toothbrushes, deodorant, shampoo, hair dryer, make-up, towels), cookware you put in a separate box to move, as well as slippers and clothes for all family members. Do not forget to get an iron.
  • Do not try to unpack everything in the first few days – it could lead to chaos. Only when all the furniture is fully assembled and put in place, you can begin unpacking and arranging the things.

10 rules to facilitate your moving

Here are 10 things that can help you in packaging

  • Store your winter clothes clean in their cases, and always in the same place. Coats, jackets, shoes, sweaters and winter socks and even underwear – all in one cabinet, both male and female, and children. The same goes for the summer things, small household appliances, dishes for special occasions, tools.
  • Once a month sort out your children’s things. Throw away or donate the items that became short or impossible to wear. Special bags for small items (socks, panties, gloves, hats) will help you not to lose anything and find everything quickly.
  • Kitchen. Keep all utensils, which you do not use every day, in their original packaging; spices, cereals, pasta – in jars, keep everything in plastic containers in refrigerator, and be sure to purchase a cooler bag.
  • Bath. It is important not to store anything extra, powder and household chemicals should be stored in a plastic container.
  • During the 2 weeks before the moving, purchase boxes, tape, rope, and other packaging materials. Note that large boxes are inconvenient, they are hard to take, lift, carry by one person.
  • When packing, put small boxes into bigger, etc.
  • Put a box of coffee in a coffee maker; clothespins, powder, bags for delicate items, air conditioning in the washing machine; tea and sugar into the kettle. Cups, plates, cutlery can be put into the microwave. The same goes for bed linen, pillows and blankets.
  • In each box, place a list of those things that you move in it, make a copy and a number of the box.
  • If possible, prepare the place where you are moving: make the cleaning, repair all that is defective.
  • And, most importantly, enjoy the fact that you are starting a new life with everything new))))

Selecting the day of the week for the moving

Everyone knows that Monday is a difficult day. Therefore, it is not necessary to assign moving on this day of the week.

Tuesday is considered the best day of the week to start any serious business – construction, repairs, travel, etc. It is also the most favorable for moving.

Wednesday is not a suitable day for moving. It is believed that in this case the life at the new place is short and without guests.

Saturday is a good day for the moving. Everything will be "like clockwork."

Friday is just as unfavorable for the moving day as Monday.

Saturday is a day when everything is resolved quickly and successfully. The move will take place easily, without unforeseen problems and difficulties.

Sunday is the day when it is not necessary to plan any serious cases. It is designed for relaxation. Therefore, to ensure a successful moving, it is better to wait until Tuesday.

But it is certainly up to you to decide what day is convenient for you!
