  • Buy the packaging materials and cartons
  • Do not wrap the things into newspapers if you want to have them clean, white paper is more suitable for this purpose.
  • Heavy objects should be packed in small cartons and light things in big ones.
  • Every carton should be supplied with the inventory list.
  • The furniture that consists of several parts should be disassembled, but don’t forget to put the necessary tools for this in a separate box labelled “ESSENTIALS.”
  • To ease your life later, put labels on all the cartons with the list of the items and room destination.

  • If you have a boat or a trailer, prepare its transportation.
  • You will be very busy on the day of removal, so ask your friends or relatives to help you with children and pets.

  • Decide the questions connected with electricity, gas, telephone, Internet, Foxtel.
  • Order the cleaners to your new house to prepare it for your arrival; don’t forget to tidy your old house as well.
  • If you have books, DVDs, videos taken from the library, return them.

  • Supply your moving company with the plan of your future house with furniture in it.
  • Bed linens, towels and other things necessary for the first night should be placed in a separate box.
  • Think of the items that you may need first of all (e.g., keys, telephone chargers, remote controls, bed legs, telephone handset, instructions for furniture assembly) and put them in a separate box with the label “ESSENTIALS”.
  • Stop the delivery of milk, newspapers and other items.
  • Inform the Post Office about your new address.
  • If you have a gardener, a cleaner or a babysitter, advertise their services.
  • Take care about your lawn mower (drain it) and remove the batteries from all the devices.
  • If you plan to use your car, check it in advance.
  • Your indoor plants should be watered and put into plastic lined boxes beforehand.
  • Inspect your new house to see that it is in the same condition as it was when you bought it and sign the contract.

  • Prepare your refrigerator for the move: defrost it, air and clean.
  • Ensure that the movers’ transport can get to your house without any obstacles.
  • Don’t forget dry cleaning.
  • Pack the personal belongings that you will transport yourself.
  • Supply your moving company with your new address and contact phone number.
  • Put the most important medicines, kids’ favorites, first aid kit, baby items, toiletries, children’s clothes, tea, coffee, milk, kettle, work clothes, snacks, and all other things that you may need on your first day in a new place in a separate box and label it “SURVIVAL”. Put there your pet’s things as well.
  • When the professional packers come on the day of removal, leave the necessary clothes.
  • Check the availability of keys and other access details to your new house.
  • The new owners of your house will be pleased to read your welcome note and they may need your new address. So prepare them in advance.

  • While the things are loaded into the truck, check the whole house for the things left. Don’t forget about the tops of cupboards and wardrobes.
  • Put the food that you are going to take with you in a cooler container.

  • If the house was rented, control the condition of the property and document this with the agent.
  • Control the process of unloading to be satisfied with the results.
  • To feel yourself securely in a new house, check or change the locks and security system.
  • Give detailed instructions to the loaders as to the disposition of boxes with your property.
  • Ensure that you have the keys and necessary instructions connected with your new house.
  • If your moving was a long distance or interstate, check and sign the inventory.
  • Ask the responsible people to connect hot water and all the utilities.
  • Visit the local council to get the information as to garbage collection and resident’s folders.
  • Be ready to greet your new neighbors.
